Let's first define the word "campaign." Generally, a campaign is the operation, program, position, platform, journey, race, project, or venue followed or performed, in an effort to reach the goal or outcome of your heart's desire.

A campaign can be something nice and fuzzy, like a campaign to raise funds for a good cause.

Or it can be an important, patriotic military campaign!

Ah, yes. the campaign trail!
The fresh smell of political stench is in the air.

So, what exactly is a "political" campaign?

It is the "race" or "journey" to win an election, in order to hold political office.

CHANGE
We Can Fear!

And what do our lovely, fantastic, amazing politicians do when campaigning? They show us how much they love
us with their very happy faces.

What is more fun than having your television set saturated and over run, each election year, by our wonderful politicians who love and care about the American people?

Next, let's review the word "Election."

e·lec·tion [i-lek-shuhn]

1. The selection of a person or persons for office by vote.

2. A public vote upon a proposition submitted.

3. The act of electing.

4. The choice by God, of individuals, as for a particular work or for favor or salvation. (Our personal favorite!)

Now let's review a new word:

e·lec·tion·eer·ing [i-lek-shuhn-ir-ing]

What does it mean? It's defined as:

1. Persuasion of voters in a political campaign

2. the act of persuading (or attempting to persuade); communication intended to induce belief or action

3. The process of engineering an election to win, or attempting to do so.

(Also a song from the Radiohead album, OK Computer.)

Why do we "electioneer"? To get votes:

Vote (vot·ed, vot·ing)

  • 1. A formal expression of opinion or choice, either positive or negative, made by an individual or body of individuals.

  • 2. The means by which such expression is made, as a ballot, ticket, etc.

  • 3. The decision reached by voting, as by a majority of ballots cast.

  • 4. To express or signify will or choice in a matter, as by casting a ballot.

So, when we vote we cast our ballot. We are Balloting. We are voting on the acceptance or rejection of a candidate.

Voting is Hard

If politicians are going to persuade voters to cast ballots for them, they must Politicize everything to help sell you on giving them a job.

po·lit·i·cize [puh-lit-uh-sahyz]

  • 1. To give something political characteristics; to turn into a political issue.

  • 2. To make someone politically active or aware. To "politicize the discussion."

  • 3. Political in character, used to give a negative implication to someone else wanting to examine the interests at stake. "We shouldn't allow the opposition to politicize this issue."
And what popular tactic do we use to sell people on politics? Propaganda! Very good!

Prop·a·ganda [prop-uh-gan-duh]

  • 1. Information, ideas, or rumors deliberately spread widely to help or harm a person, group, movement, institution, nation, etc.

  • 2. The particular doctrines or principles propagated by an organization or movement.

  • 3. An organization or movement for the spreading of propaganda.

Here's another great word. Let's talk "Spin." What do we mean by this? Let's take a look:

Spin (Slang.)

  • 1. Revolve quickly and repeatedly around one's own axis; "The dervishes whirl around and around without getting dizzy."

  • 2. To whirl; cause to spin.

  • 3. To make up a story; to "spin a yarn."

  • 4. A particular viewpoint or bias, esp. in the media; slant: They tried to put a favorable spin on the news coverage of the controversial speech.

  • Twist and turn so as to give an intended interpretation; "The President's spokesmen had to spin the story to make it less embarrassing."

  • A distinctive interpretation (especially as used by politicians to sway public opinion); "the campaign put a favorable spin on the story"

Many "spinners" can also be flip-floppers.
What is a flip-flopper?

flip-flop (Slang.)

A person, especially a politician, who changes his opinion. When Nixon was warned during his rein he'd be charged with flip-flopping, his response was, "Circumstances change!" Famous last words.

Put all these lovely words and meanings together and you get the word Electionalize.
